E3 2009 News

Between the 2nd and 4th of June, the LA Convention Center will host this year's E3 Expo, and there's quite a lot to say about it. Just think about what happened last year - Microsoft released demos for Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5 and Gears of War 2, while Nintendo announced the Wii MotionPlus, and Sony came up with a Resistance 2 demo and details about the updated PlayStation Network. Obviously, these are only a few of the many big things that happened last year, so let's leave the past behind and grab some E3 2009 news, shall we?

Since freebies and great deals are something most people are looking for, I'll start with this - from Monday, May 18th at 10am through Friday, May 29th at 10pm, you can get two tickets for the price of one and go to the Video Games Live Concert at the Greek Theatre. More details can be found here.

Next, we have Macquarie Research, a firm that suggests Nintendo will show the new Mario, Zelda, and Wii Fit titles next week, at the E3. "We understand Wii Fit Plus will be launched at E3, which will be sold separately from the board and in a bundle and will capitalise on the 17 million existing Wii Fit users. We expect Nintendo to learn its lessons from last year and provide more gamer-centric announcements at E3 such as a new Zelda or Mario title for the Wii (in addition to the new Zelda for DS). We do not expect a price cut and see an outside chance that new accessories for Wii could be announced," they said.

Even more, the research firm thinks a new PSP will arrive next week, but its price may be too high for a handheld, probably dangerously close to $300.

Unfortunately, when we look at the official statements from Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony, there's nothing to see - everyone's excited, but none of them says anything about what they have in store for us. Well, I guess we should wait and see 'till next week, right?

New Types Of Gladiators!

Ever thought about the types of gladiators there were in the old times, and the types of gladiators that are fighting these days? Basically, there was only one type - the winner. After all, a dead gladiator can't be called "gladiator," at least according to my personal point of view. These days, some sports are almost like the arenas where gladiators were fighting for their lives a few thousand years ago, and because I am not that crazy about sports, let's take a look at one of the new types of gladiators, the Wii gladiator!

Gladiator A.D. is one of those titles announced just in time for E3. Coming from High Voltage Software, this game will be a bloody, MotionPlus-supporting combat title that will surely come in handy in most Wii gamers' libraries.

According to High Voltage's Eric Nolfsinger, "Gladiator takes an over-the-shoulder approach to bring the player right into the action. With the Wii-remotes representing the right and left hand, the player can accurately control his attacks, blocks, and dodges. The player has three directional attacks: left slice, right slash, and overhead chop."

Hell, yeah! That's what I really like about such games on the Wii! While playing combat games on the PC doesn't really get you moving, the Wii helps you play and workout at the same time. Hey, maybe you can even learn some combat moves with this game, don't you think?

Just think about this - "We incorporate slow down of the larger power attacks, similar to the movie 300, to allow players a cinematic attempt to perfect block these attacks." Cool enough?

Unfortunately, Gladiator A.D. is set to arrive on everyone's Wii in the first quarter of 2010, so you can take your time to practice real world combat until then. Hey, maybe you should even check "The 300," if you missed it until now!

Indigo Prophecy 2 Is Dead

Ever played Indigo Prophecy? If you did, I am sure this wasn't "just another game," but if you haven't, you should. Despite the fact it will soon be four years old, Indigo Prophecy it's still a great game, just as it happens with most adventure games. Now, if we could only talk about Indigo Prophecy 2...

... because that's what most fans are waiting for, and once you play Indigo Prophecy, you may become one... or not, but you will surely feel the need to move on with the story. Well, the news is bad for everyone, maybe except those who didn't manage to enjoy the game at all. After all, no matter how great could be one game, there's always someone who doesn't like it, don't you think?

Quantic Dream's co-CEO David Cage spoke to 1up, saying that "After Indigo, I wanted to work on something different because I thought the game would be a commercial disaster. It was really different from what the industry was doing and there was absolutely no hype about emotion or narrative. But when we started talking to publishers, many of them told us they loved Indigo and they were interested in publishing the sequel. So I started thinking of Indigo 2 but I quickly realized I had nothing more to say on this story and these characters. I really enjoyed the time I spent with them, but they were attached to a moment in my life, and I had moved on. I wanted to write something more personal, deeper, more adult, with no world to save and no supernatural powers."

While "more adult" sounds OK with me, "nothing more to say on this story" is clear as the sky above - Indigo Prophecy 2 is dead, even before being born. Well, that's a shame, but I guess we'll have to handle that like serious gamers and look forward. With or without Indigo Prophecy 2, the show must go on...
