Best Free Online MMORPG – Part III

A few days passed since we talked about the best free online MMORPG, but I am sure you haven't forgotten our little quest here. After all, we're not trying to push any game forward as a winner, as it usually happens in "best of" rankings you get to see here and there all over the online realm. The only winner is you, the one reading these lines, because discovering a whole bunch of games that are also free to play will make you a wiser gamer. True or not true?

Best Free Online MMORPG

Good, so we got through the first part of the alphabet, and now we are facing the candidates starting with the letter "G," but this doesn't mean we can't turn back, if needed. It all depends on what pops up until we get to the end of the story... and what I may remember. After all, we're all humans, and forgetting stuff is a human thing.

To be honest, I have no idea how many games we'll manage to point out today, but let's stop talking and start walking, shall we? The realm of the best free online MMORPG is waiting for us to step in once again!

1. Guild Wars is one of the best choices for MMORPG freaks on a budget. Its major advantage is that you only need to buy the stand alone episodes as they come out, and you'll be able to play the game for free. Compared to games like WoW or Eve Online, this is clearly better... at least to your budget, of course.

So far, Guild Wars got three stand-alone episodes and one expansion pack, and Guild Wars 2 is on the way. Last month, NCSoft announced that over 6 million units have been sold, and while Guild Wars 2 has been in the works for over 2 years now, there's nothing sure about its release date/features.

One last thing to say about this game - it may not have a free trial version available, but it's surely worth a try!

2. Hello Kitty Online is a game that's still in Beta stage, but I am sure it will get a lot of followers once it goes public. Why? Heh, the name should say it all! If it doesn't, then move to the next item in the list, all right?

Anyway, the idea behind Hello Kitty Online is to provide gamers with a chance to help Hello Kitty and friends to wake up and defeat some dark evil force. Nothing out of ordinary, but it is worth mentioning that HKO will focus more on interaction and resource gathering, while being completely free to play.

3. Lunia is one of those games that seem stuck in Beta stage, but please don't get me wrong - they only seem to be stuck, because they get regular updates, and - in most cases - are better than various "final" releases.

This time, we're talking about a special MMORPG, one that gives you the freedom to move around using the arrow keys or a gamepad, instead of your mouse. Even attacks are being launched using various key combinations, and I am sure thousands of pointing devices are thankful for that.

PvP arenas allow 1 on 1 up to 8 on 8 combat, but this is not all of it - you can enjoy RPG and action elements alone, or side by side with your friends. There are 99 levels to go for each character, so... I guess this should be enough to make it worth a try, don't you think?

4. Monster Farm Online is(was, actually) only available in Japanese, currently being closed, but will reopen in November, according to the official site. What will become available then is surely a Beta version, so enjoying it for free won't hurt anyone. Maybe not quite a worthy candidate for the best free online MMORPG crown, but a quick one to try... if you can handle Japanese language! ;)

5. MU Online is one of the most notorious games amongst those waiting for Diablo 3 to come out, or at least that's how I see it. The game looks good, and it's quite entertaining, but I hate it. Don't ask me why, I just hate it after watching countless hours others play it, and not playing at least a minute by myself.

Released back in 2003, it still has a solid fan base, and since it's completely free to download and play, you should definitely give it a try!

6. RuneScape is the current king of the hill, with over 8.5 million active accounts and holding a Guinness World Record - most popular free MMORPG. That's it, any other words are pointless at this time!

These being said, I conclude third episode of our quest, but get ready for the fourth and, probably, last one. When? In a few days... just be sure not to miss it! ;)

Best Free Online MMORPG – Part II

As I promised two days ago, our quest for the best free online MMORPG continues, but we won't finish it here. Probably it's going to take at least another encounter with these awesome games, and I am sure there will still be some of them left. Why? Well, the reason is obvious - we're talking about a world that's changing as we speak, and what's free now may not be free tomorrow, while some interesting alpha-stage project may become tomorrow's king of the free MMORPG arena!

Last time, we had 5 stops, with 6 games, and today we'll probably have a few extra ones. Just keep in mind that I'm not trying to provide you mini-reviews of the games, especially since I didn't manage to play all of them, so best thing for you to do is to click the links and visit the official pages of each one and see for yourself. I'm just trying to be your "guiding light" here...

Oh, yeah - this may be second part of the quest for the best free online MMORPG, but I'll count from 1 to... 6-7-8 to make things easier. I hope that's OK with you. These being said, let's get things moving, shall we?

1. Entropia Universe is a MMORPG designed by MindArk, one of the few such games that managed to enter the Guinness World Records Book two times, in 2004 and 2008. The reason is not the number of players, but the most expensive virtual world objects ever sold...

...and the above leads us to the freedom of playing it part - while you can create an account and enjoy some parts of it for free, buying credits is the way to fully enjoy Entropia Universe and, if you play it well, maybe even make a profit out of it.

Regarding the graphics part, it's enough to say that soon, the game's engine will be CryEngine 2, and since Crysis uses it... draw the conclusion for yourselves!

2. Cronous is a game that was released in 2007, and has become free to play in the meantime, but still keeps an item shop where various premium items can be purchased for real money.

With pretty low system requirements for the year 2009 and decent graphics, Cronous can help you waste some time and have fun at the same time.

3. Dungeon Runners, published by NCSoft, is a free fantasy MMORPG that was released back in 2007. Now, the client software is free to download and use, with unlimited free gameplay... but paying an optional $4.99 fee gives you access to a bunch of features that will surely enhance your gaming experience a lot.

Why try it? Heh, here's my favorite part - Dungeon Runners' in-game music has been composed by Tracy W. Bush and is pretty similar to Diablo II's upcoming soundtrack, each of the boss monsters having a different theme song, from black metal(>:)) to synthpop and funk.

4. Fiesta comes from Korea, and features an anime style world and characters, but it's also available in English, German, French and Spanish.

Completely free to download and play, Fiesta has a "cash shop" for premium items, as most free MMORPGs you'll ever find. Anyway, this is another candidate for the best free online MMORPG crown you should check out.

5. Free Realms is a MMORPG developed by Sony Online Entertainment currently available for the PC, but a PlayStation 3 version is also expected to drop in the third quarter of 2009.

Released at the end of April, this is probably the most recent free MMORPG I found, although various subscriptions are being offered, including a $10 family account allowing five logins at the same time. Pretty sweeet, don't you think?

This is it for today's best free online MMORPG story, but be sure to check back in a few days. We're still far from the end of our road...

Best Free Online MMORPG

If you're looking for the best free online MMORPG, then you're in for a loooong quest. In fact, I don't think there's anyone around able to try them all, but we can try to find out more about the most successful ones, don't you think? Even more, if we take things a few steps further, I will add a bit of my experience, especially what I heard from my MMORPG-maniacal friends. The reason is that - according to them, and I must agree - there are still a lot of awesome free games out there that don't get the attention they deserve.
Best Free Online MMORPG
First of all, a little warning - some of the games I'll name below are free to play, but have some premium content, available for some kind of credits that can only be purchased with real money, but sometimes premium content is also offered for accomplishing various tasks, depending on the game. The idea is that the list below contains games that are free to download, play, and can be enjoyed without having to pay, although premium content sometimes usually gives you an advantage.

Ready or not, here's the best free online MMORPG list I can come up with today... just don't take the order seriously - I just write them down as I remember them, and between calls/YM discussions with my friends, asking for the best free online MMORPG they know.

1. 2Moons and 9Dragons come both from Acclaim, and while the first one is a completely free classic MMORPG with a fictional story/realms, the second one is a martial arts MMORPG set in China during the Ming Dynasty, including actual geography and places, like the Shaolin Temple or The Great Wall, also free to play.

If you have at least 1GB of memory and a GeForce MX video card, you can enjoy both these games, although you won't be able to push everything to max on that ancient card. Just as a side note, both games have awesome graphics, and worth checking out.

2. Anarchy Online is partially free to play, supported by in-game advertising, with additional realms available to paying gamers only. I tried it, I hated it, I moved on, but I must admit it's a pretty complex game, and despite the fact it was released back in 2001, looks pretty good. After all, it comes from Funcom, the creators of Age of Conan...

3. Archlord is a completely free to play MMORPG that I played and enjoyed, without becoming addicted. I saved my user and password for later retrieval, and stopped somewhere along the way. Graphics are pretty good, and action can get boring from time to time, but I am sure some consider it to be the best free online MMORPG... and I think you should give it a try. You will hate it or love it pretty quick, I can bet on that.

4. Atlantica Online is a game released in late October, 2008, set in an alternate history, combining fantasy with steampunk elements. It is free to play, generating revenue with the help of the online shop of the company behind it. Most reviews were extremely good, and since the graphics are looking great... this is another MMORPG to try!

5. Last stop today in our quest for the best free online MMORPG is Cabal Online, another good looking game set in a mythical world, but while this is free of any charge, premium items require players to spend real money to get them.

This is all for today, but be sure we'll continue in the near future our trip in the free MMORPG universe, because there's a lot to find in this world!
