A role playing game (usually known as RPG) is a game where the players assume the roles of different fictional characters. The players will determine all the moves and actions of the game characters, and they will be able to do all sort of actions, some very similar to real life. There are rules to respect, but many times the player has the freedom of improvising. There are thousands of RPG video games, that can be bought and installed on the computer, but there are also many free online role playing games.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
Most of them are based on history or mythical creatures or events, and in these games you will have to control armies, build your own town, create soldiers and fighters, and destroy the enemies. Many of them are featuring some cool mythical creatures such as dragons, monsters, wizards, orcs, elves, angels, devils and many more. In this article we are going to present some of the free online RPG games. There are so many of them, so we’ll say just a few words about each one, to have the chance to present more of them.

Let’s begin with the game called “9 Dragons”. Here you will start as a peasant, and as you advance in the game you will fulfill your destiny as a hero. You will travel to the land, and discover many adventures, learn over 500 martial arts moves and use over 200 weapons.

Another famous game is the Alien Adoption Agency (simply known as AAA or A3). It is played by many people for a few years now, and it can be really fun. The action takes place in Georgetown, a nice town with a cool architecture and some good restaurants. You will play with some funny looking aliens, and you can do all sort of crazy things. You can go fishing, fight with other players, relax in the garden, play some casino games and you can even abduct humans. It is a really fun RPG game, and it will keep you busy for hours, days and who knows maybe years And it is absolutely free, it just requires a sign up first.

Another game is the “Anarchy online”. It is a futuristic science fiction RPG game, in which you will step 30.000 years into the future. In this time many things are possible, such as healing any kind of disease with surgical implants or microscopic nano-bots or transforming a child into a destructive weapon.

A cartoon style RPG game is the “Angels online”. Here you will work for the Archangel Michael and have all kinds of missions to defend the Garden of Eden.

Another one is the Archlord game. This is an epic fantasy mix with some great orchestra music and nice graphics, where you will control all sort of mythical creatures and you can even have the chance to rule the world from the game.

Another fun thing about the RPG online games, is that you get the chance to become a part of the story of the game. All your actions will change the storyline, and depending on you the game will go one direction or another. A game that let’s you get involved in its story is the Aruarose.

An RPG game where a large number of players interact with each other while they are all part of a virtual world, is called a “massively multiplayer online role playing game”. Or you can simply call it a MMORPG game. One game of this type is the Astonia 3. Here each player has the role of a warrior or a mage, and each ones trains and fights to become the best from the world of Astonia. Atu’los online is also a MMORPG game, made in the classic isometric style. It takes place in the Medieval age, and has a nice story with 8 classes of characters to choose from.

Not all of the RPG games have monsters or medieval characters. The “Bang howdy” game has Indian and cowboy characters. You will have to win games in the Indian trading post or in the cowboy town, and with each battle you will get more money, which you can use to buy clothes, train tickets to travel and many more other stuff. You can also make teams with other players and form a powerful gang.

A classical RPG game, that involves dungeons, dragons, wizards, elves, dwarfs and stuff like this is the Battle of Phantasia. You will be able to do all sort of things in this game and live great adventures while fighting the powers of evil.

There are even RPG games where you can enter the world of pirates. One of them is the Bounty Bay online game. Here you can explore the world and the seas while controlling your crew members, and also be careful for the pirates. Or you can play as a pirate, and destroy and steal everything in your path.

There is even a RPG game that brings the comic book heroes to live. It is called City of heroes and it is a constantly expanding universe. You will join other millions of heroes and you will have to fight the evil guys such as criminals, villains or monsters. If you don’t want to be a part of the positive heroes, then you can join the City of villains, and play as a bad guy. Either if you play as a hero or a villain you will be able to create your own character, and you will have infinite costume options.

If you really like the classical RPG games, then you can also play the Dragonica online. Here you can play as a warrior, magician, archer or thief and you will go through many missions and quests and unlock the Hidden Fields. The graphic of this game is pretty cool and it features a high degree of customization. A role playing game that has some cute anime style characters and great graphics is the Dream of mirror online (or simply DOMO). There will be many races and aventures to choose from in this one and you will find all sort of characters such as midget sprites, fox girls or people with antennae hair.

A massive multiplayer online RPG game, with cool graphics is the MU online. It features more than 100.000 combinations of weapons, tools and armors and as you advance in the game you will love it more and more. A RPG game that is quite similar to the Pokemon cartoon series, is the Nostale. Here you will find all sort of funny and cute creatures, and after you fight them you can also capture them and keep them as a pet. Then you will have to train them and you can use them in fights.

As you can see there are so many RPG games, and time doesn’t allow us to present them all. So we’ll discuss just one more. For example the Project Entropia. This is also a massive game, with millions of users involved, from all over the world. You will enter a virtual world where you will be able to exchange money into PED (Project Entropia Dollars) and then back into the real money. So you won’t play this game just for fun, you can also play it to make money! So good luck!

All of these games are played directly into your browser, so they don’t need any installation at all. The RPG games are famous for being so addictive, and it is known that many people are spending many hours a day just playing these kinds of games. The great thing is that you won’t play just against the computer, but you will be able to interact with other people, from all over the world. You will become friends and allies with some of them, you will fight others or you will rule and command them. Practically you will become a part of a virtual world, similar to the real world, but where almost anything is possible. After all there are so many RPG games, and most of them are really fun to play and addictive, so when you have some free time and you don’t know how to spend it, we suggest starting a career in a role playing game. (RPG).

Bookworm Adventures 2 is a sequel of PopCap’s 2007 game that was added RPG elements and presents itself to be an adorable and fun to play game. Bookworm was originally an experience of exercising the abilities to find words among a jumble of letter files. Adding ‘Adventures’ next to the title turns the game into an easy story with foes to fight against at the same time experiencing points to be scored. PopCap has a tradition in creating games that are easy to access to offering a long lasting experience that it is still maintain in this sequel of Bookworm.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The difference between Bookworm and its sequel, Bookworm Adventures, lies in the fact that you was supposed in the former version to connect adjacent tiles to come up with a word, whereas in Adventures you can use any tile whether or not it touches one of your other selected pieces. As a player you are carried through easy stages of battles and even if you are close to death you still can survive being allowed to a health potion. The length of the game however balances the simplicity of the gameplay.

Some features belonging to Bookmark Adventures 2 are common to those presented by PopCap in a recent release: Plants vs. Zombies. Each level you reach enables you to unlock new items, but you are entitled to a restricted number of item slots good to be used in battle, the best thing for you left is to select the right tools for the job. The story of the game is separated in three books, each chapter consisting of ten chapters that casts a lot of foes toward you till you end up being the chapter boss.

The hero of the game is Lex, a bookworm whose ‘job’ is to encourage you while you spell big words during the battle. Depending on the length a complexity of the word, the dimension of the damage to be faced is measured. The dictionary provided by the game has abbreviations and censures the vulgar words; while experiencing different tile combinations you can learn also new words. Bookmark adventures 2 presents itself as a game full of innocent humor translated in a silly note with characters displayed in a shape of paper doll manner that looks somehow poor but remaining still exciting. The experience is slow but gradually enhancing the rhythm by throwing more and more items and guys always tougher than the previous, but this graduation is not necessary hastily presented, but a leisurely pace. The IGN scored the game 9 in regard to the presentation, 7.5 for graphics, 8.5 for sound, 8.0 for the gameplay and 8.5 for Lasting Appeal, the overall scoring reaching 8.3 meaning an impressive game to play.

In October 20, Gearbox will release “Borderlands” in North America, a both RPG and a shooter game, that appears to be counted among the games that were head titles on the 2009 list of new releases. “Borderlands” is planned to be an RPG and a shooter, but actually it is perceived more as a shooter. In this game the player has to make use of his quick reflexes skills in order to tag the foes in their weakest points; the foes present themselves in a shape of humanoids and monstrous creatures; for these last ones, the player has to pin in their mouth or in different vulnerable spots behind their armor. Being not skillful with targeting the player’s life will not last too long.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
So you play as a shooter, but all this time you are in the hands of statistics that will affect your weapon’s accuracy, or it can bring a lot of damage to your playing. Choosing a specific type of weapon, you are able to become more familiar with its use, in this way boosting the rating of your class’ shotgun that leads to improved accuracy of your shots. Your skills are also classified, the game scoring you one point for every skill that belongs to five character levels. The class nominated for soldiers was tested and the result lead to a division of the soldier’s skills in medic, infantry and support branches.

In your unfolding of skills your character is allotted aids, such as scorpio turret, in order to fire at the foes next to you in the battle. It depends on you how you decide to allocate the points, and according to this you will get weaponry upgrades such as guided missile upgrade or, for the one who reaches the of the medic tree will have health improvements upgrades. Your weapons (pistols, combat rifles, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, energy weapons as well) are endowed with special effects such as fire rounds or acid blasts or electrical discharges. To guard yourself against death you have a spring of health from where you can take ‘supply’ and a shield that can be upgraded and will be recharged after damage is done. In case you find yourself in a close-to-death state, you are given the option to crawl and aim to kill some enemies nearby, thus you would be able to get back on your feet.

The game offers also a tutorial not before entering the option of picking up a class and a name for after that to be guided by a talkative tiny robot that will teach you the basics of motions and shooting. At the beginning to make the things easier for you, you are simply facing the killings and collecting variety with few possibilities of gaining access to machines’ vendors, allowing you the option to purchase grenades, weapons and even health packages. After this guide tour, you are cast into the game with different levels of combats and different types of enemies, but no further details are to be displayed; this part is left to the players to discover in the October release of “Borderlands”.

When Akella and Playlogic have released Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, it was displayed as an exciting RPG adventure with various situations where players were involved in an exciting journey as pirates to swordfight, trade goods, take over cities and forts and so on. Being recently released, its sequel made the object of IGN reviewing in order to check the novelty introduced by the reteamed Akella and Playlogic. Compared to the first game, this new one players can make their own life on the sea performing one the characters they choose: merchant, corsair or adventurer. The characters are ruled by a P.I.R.A.T.E.S. system that dictates the way you can pull out the sword, or how much loot you can carry and how much health you are entitled to. The same system is present in the ship’s behavior ruling over the way you navigate and the way of fighting in combats using your vessels.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The good thing with this system is that you can improve your skills this leading to a specialization in certain abilities, for instance if you prove good handling with your blade, then you are allowed to become an expert fencer and make additional damage on foes. Next to this feature you are able to build your reputation as a captain by performing several things, such as sailing into ports, getting goods for your crew, hiring new mates on board of your ship. You are allowed to disembark and run different activities on the shore including exploration of different dungeons where buried gold might be found.

The fact that the game doesn’t come with any tutorial at all makes the discovery of all these facets very difficult to approach. And Age of Pirates 2 has ten separate difficulty levels, but even if you set the game on the level of a beginner you don’t get any information regarding what you need for instance to control the ship, or to access menus. This is very frustrating since you are left with the feeling of making your way through the game sensing that you don’t know how to do a thing. Not to mention that beside the fact that it lacks the tutorial it is also lacking information about certain elements of gameplay. For instance, while being onshore, you have different conversations with others in which you are supposed to answer in specific terminology regarding ships and in case you don’t have an internet browser opened you are left with the desire to have these features already developed in your gameplay. Maps are also the object of complaining as you find it hard to understand their directions when you are supposed to maneuver through the jungles of a certain location.

The point is that the game implies so many nautical elements that a player probably should be previously familiar with especially that the voyages and situations are everything but peaceful and common. While being reviewed, all in one the game presented itself with controls that are unintuitive, lack of instructions and for these issues Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships rated a mediocre IGN score of 5.7, hoping at the same time for a better sequel.

The world of the mischievous minions has suffered quite a few changes compared to the first Overlord game through that that it introduces new tricks, new ways to operate the machinery, sail the open seas as well as develop an weird talent in attacking the baby seals. Overlord II starts as a brand new game, where the player faces a new enemy (a Roman-like Glorious Empire populated by obese nobles) is supposed to begin the evil dominion right from the scratch. The characters are elves, Empire’s obese nobles and snobs, and the fairies. The tone of the game breathes comical-like situations with a lot of fun to go through. The minions are the active characters, attacking enemies, and acting like real pain in the neck. In the game there are four types of elves whom you are aware of long after the game has started, but when you do, you are already endowed with a great mini-army. Being an overlord you need to have the support of this army as there is a lot of heavy lifting to do and toughest battles to face.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Deploying the minions on the battlefield requires strategy skills as your creatures are very dependable on the situations they encounter trying to find ways to attack the present danger. However they prove sometimes to be dumb (acting in funny ways that make them loose their lives) in this case they require their overlord management. But even if they have these momentary lapses of reasoning they are still a bunch of talented creatures with new traits, such as the ability to ride various mounts that make them be more effective and speedy. A feature that turns the game into its best points, is the possibility of an overlord to possess a subordinate and to play from his point of view perspective.

Compared to the previous Overlord this one allows this time the players to manually move the view on the screen, but unfortunately this feature is handed over to the right stick of the controller, the same one that moves your minions, therefore you often see that the minions are moving when you actually wanted to move the camera across the field. Other flaw is inside the targeting system which often activates a shot to a wrong object, other than the one you aimed. Some periods in the time of the game you can find yourself at a loss not knowing what to do or where exactly you are.

The duration of the game is more than 20 hours and playing a two-player competition available through the cooperatives mode, might turn it into a funnier play, though this mode isn’t as deep and multi-featured as other multiplayer games offer. Better than it predecessor, Overlord II displays more detailed environments including a diversity of locations, such as snowy passes, jungles, green hills, and even the overlord’s underworld tower. The voices of your minions are heard in a funny squealing with which you get used in time.

As you play the game right from the start till you reach the end you are given the impression that everything is changed compared to the previous one you’ve played, so you end up asking yourself: Is Overlord II a brand new game?

Petroglyph is known as a company to support the RTS games, but now with the new release (joined by True Games) “Mytheon”, the company takes a step further into the online games market.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The new game “Mytheon” is revealed to be as a mixture of action, strategy, and RPG, further details being delivered by Peter Cesario, the director of product development at True Games and Chris Rubyor, the head of the design dept. at Petroglyph.

“Mytheon” is created as a game that mixes three genres addicted to an element that gives the ability to collect features. In this game players have to choose from a series of three different classes’ characters and start the quest for freedom that is reachable through powerful mythological gods. The ability to gain this godly freedom is possible due to the “Power Stones”, which are magical units converted into companions, structures and spells. The element that gives addiction to the game is gathering these innumerable stones that make the object of the player’s struggle.

The Petroglyph’s co-operation with True Games has the purpose to bring players an exciting gaming experience. The collaboration consisted in game mechanics, storyline, even web design. The beginning of the game is rendered by a fly over the city of Argos where the players start their quest into the Mytheon that is the connection place for the players to group, trade, and start new adventures. The trailer of the game displayed various combat encounters and plenty of creatures that players will be given the ability to control through Power Stones.

Mytheon is planned to be released as a 100% free to download and free to play for as long as one wants. The companies are striving to integrate the model into the experience of a normal play game in an attempt to avoid the oppositional effects over the dispute of “paying’ vs ‘non paying’ gamers. On the other hand the game gives the possibility of customizing the characters through the choice of three distinctive classes – Warcaster, Elementarist and Eidolon. The classes are strictly connected to power stone sets, thus enabling the gamers to gather a large amount of flexibility in playing solo or to group up for a tactical diversity.

The game is equipped also with an integrated social networking feature set, such as guild support, friends list, chat and in addition there will be a possibility to socialize through sites like Facebook and MySpace. Petroglyph in its turn brings a fresh perspective through the fact that Mytheon takes the best elements of strategy and action coloring them with light RPG features. This combination determines the game to be easier accessed to, and more exciting to the combat’s tactical elements while the settings keep the players deepened into the game. Mytheon, a quest into the mythical Ancient Greece is expected to be launched in 2010 and for anyone who needs updated news can access the company’s website.

“Knights in the Nightmare” is a role-playing game in which the tale of Aventhiem kingdom is told with several backward, forward leaps in time, between knights and nobility, with political strategies and betrayals and possibilities to skip between-battle story passages.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The character, a lost soul, you are playing crosses a series of small battles, has the skill to make the fallen knights to regain their lives, using at the same time their souls to fight with the monsters and evil forces that stay in your way. Compared to other tactical RPG, this game offers battles that are dramatically conceived where the character lives and dies by the wisp. You use a stylus to handle the wisp around isometric playing field, you can deliver weapons to the knights, and attempt to avoid enemy attacks. The attacks come in different modes, such as a shower of stars, massive snakes, and so on.

At a first glance one may think that the battles are conducted in a precision-based manner than a tactical one, but actually the fights are run in an action combined with tactical insight. You need to take decisions that are a challenge in order to make you learn all the aspects you need to consider while deciding. The battles are displayed on squares with chess-like unit types that have specific ranges in the lines of their attacks. You are limited to get only four weapons based on class, level, and an “act phase”. Some other aspects are to be considered, such as the durability of the devices, the vulnerable points of the monsters, and the time you receive to charge the weapons. Three tutorial sections offer all the information you need for performing the game.

During the battles you have to take other decisions that prove to be crucial, such as fusing weapons and use units collected in the battle to enforce them. According to the amount of recruited units you gain points and go to another level. There is this “transoul” feature through which you can select a unit to be sacrificed for merging its soul with another unit. This feature allows you to improve the recipient, but you have to be very careful in taking the decisions. In the game there aren’t impossible situations even if you take the wrong decisions, since the wrong decision is seen as a poor one that determines you to fill your ranks with nameless knights that are deserting after one fight.

The RPG’s experience of “Knights in the Nightmare” delivers characters very beautiful ornate, colorful, and detailed, with settings in a great atmosphere and abundance, and a powerful display of the attacks. The visuals and language are very evocative; the sound effects are equal to the scenes displayed. Compared to other RPG, this role-playing game definitely offers you a brand new experience with unusual mechanics and complex tactics. The skilful way that created the “Knights in the Nightmare” renders the game the look of perfect combination of elements that result in something new and exciting.

Soldak Entertainment Inc. was founded by Steven Peeler as a small independent developer, the main attention being focused on bringing new unique games to the entertainment industry. Its Kivi’s Underworld has come up to cover the desire of those who fantasize the action-RPG action. The developer has announced a new expansion that adds multiplayer to the mix and available for both PC and Mac versions. The Kivi’s Underworld Multiplayer Expansion is a team up game where players gather to defeat the forces of evil and share adventures with friends.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The gamers can explore the mysterious underworld as mighty warriors cast in battles with rain down fire on enemies, sneak disguises with stealth accessories to confound the foes as a Scout or experience adventures with any of the others numerous playable characters. The story goes like that: in a mining expedition, led by Kivi (a young lumen warrior), you venture into unknown territory where an opened pathway is unfolding to a deadly race. There is an encounter with dark elves, but Kivi is the only survivor to tell about the threat that elves represent. Kivi has to persuade his people of the existence of these deadly elves and he realizes that he is all alone in this battle.

Being Kivi or any of his partners, you need to recruit more lumen and defeat the growing dark elf menace, before they destroy your homeland and all lumens. This makes that the lumens’ fate is in your hand; the question is – can you save them? It is very easy to be learned as a game, but mastering Kivi’s Underworld turns out to be a real challenge for the players that are into it.

The basics of the game are easy to handle through the mouse left or right clicking. There are though keyboard’s shortcuts to speed most things, while moving around the Kivi’s Underworld is simply done by pointing the cursor where you want to go and then press the left mouse button.

You can choose the character with which you want to start the adventure, in the game being 20 characters available. Scoring high points helps you to gather more characters to your clan, even secret characters can join and they will prove to be helpful in your task to rescue your people. There are passive and active skills to improve the evolution of your characters in the adventure and these skills can be increasingly improved in the various ways (some temporary and some permanent) the game offers.

System Requirements for the Multiplayer Expansion are Mac Minimum specs: OS X 10.4 or 10.5; 1.2 GHz processor (PowerPC or Intel); 128MB RAM; GeForce 2 (or other equivalent); 100MB of hard drive space; DSL or better internet connection (for games on internet). Mac Recommended specs: 2.0 GHz processor (Power PC or Intel); 256MB RAM; GeForce 3 or better (or other equivalent). Windows Minimum specs: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista; 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 (or other equivalent); 128MB RAM; GeForce 2 (or other equivalent); 100 MB of hard drive space.

Fallout 3 is a game that can help those who hate reality enjoy it, maybe even a little. Why am I saying this? Well, if you played the game already, then you surely agree with the fact that the fictional world depicted by Fallout 3 is much worse than the one we’re living in but, on the other hand, a single individual – your character – can do a lot more to change it than one single man can do to reshape Earth as we know it…

Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the thin border between reality and the universe of games like Fallout, because that’s too much of a subject, really. What we should do know is continue the trip through the Fallout 3 news land, with a new piece of info that will surely make some games jump for joy – Fallout 3 DLC for PS3, finally!

So far, only those PC and Xbox 360 bastards had the privilege of enjoying DLC for Fallout 3, but now PS3 users can finally enjoy the original Operation: Anchorage pack next month, while releases of The Pitt and Broken Steel are expected to follow about four to six weeks after that.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Hey, that’s not all! Once all the above happens, PS3 Fallout 3 fans will also be awarded Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta, but still some time after the Xbox 360 and PC versions are being launched(June and July, respectively).

One last thing you should know – as strange as it may seem, all the DLC packs for Fallout 3, despite the fact they are… downloadable content, will also be available through conventional retail outlets.
