Nowadays there are two major rivals in this field: EA Sports’ FIFA Soccer and Konami’ Pro Evolution Soccer. I’ve played every game of the Pro Evo series starting with ISS and every FIFA game starting with Fifa ’98, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Pro Evolution’s take on the game. The big problem with PES has always been the licenses. You have very few licensed teams; some of the teams are missing and some have different names from the real world (Chelsea FC, for example, is London FC). The Master League mode that I mentioned above is something that PES fans know and love since the beginning. There are things that, as a PES veteran, I sort of miss. Like the training mode based on different challenges, like free kicks, which had the purpose of teaching you the basics on how to become a good player. This sort of training disappeared since PES 6, this title being the last that had it. One more feature that is less important, but I still miss it, is the possibility to play home and away exhibition matches. Me and a couple of friends used to gather around and play championships and every two players played home and away, so the loser of one match could prove that he had bad luck in the first leg and qualify by winning in the second match.

Still, PES 2011 revolutionized the Pro Evo passing system, introducing the power gauges for them. Also, the camera viewing angle is changed, as a more TV like camera is employed, which also gives greater visibility. It may take a little time to get adjusted to it, but it’s really useful.
