Half-Life Will Go On After Episode 3

The developers of Half-Life have decided to continue the story even after the third episode. Doug Lombardi from Valve has mentioned in a recent interview: "We haven’t announced anything specific, but Half-Life won’t end at Episode Three – hang on to your crowbars!"

Gordon and Alyx, main characters

So the fans are to expect either some more episodic content or a really new and big game that could be named Half-Life 3 - there's not much that would suprize us these days, at least from this perspective. However, it would be interesting to see how the plot in the game story would evolve and the possible twists it may have. And since the graphics were impressive in HL2 - Episode 2, one would expect something even better in the upcoming Episode 3.

Hopefully, this time, not with Boring Freeman...the most silent prrotagonist, ever.

Whoa whoa whoa, there. You can't hate on Gordon Freeman. His silence just makes the game a hell of a lot better. The Half-Life universe would suck if Gordy was another one-liner spouting action hero. Instead, you're supposed to project onto him. He's a blank slate for the player to use their imaginations on.

@Cheshire

However true that may be, I'm still not able to actually tell an NPC to "Fuck off and stop telling me to reload!"

...actually I am, but my method uses less words and two shotgun shells.

@Lunch

You'd still not be able to tell an NPC to fuck off if the main protagonist was another one-liner spouting action hero.

The story needs a milestone or resolution. Merely changing venues and cities will make the Half-Life universe go stale. The third episode can end the current issue with the portal, but if there is a Half-Life 3, the story of the original accident and its resolution (good or bad) needs to have an end. The universe can still exist and other games can be made based on it, but people have been dragged along this mysterious story line with Freeman and the G-Man that it has to be completed and UNDERSTOOD before continuing on. I hate boring soap-opera's and like it when stories have a beginning, middle, and end. Lacking this, just shows a software house with a lack of imagination, milking its previous successes to death. Hopefully Valve won't demonstrate this mistake.

I think it would be awesome if it turns out that a few years later, Alyx was the one who was the player/prisoner in the portal game, and in Half-Life 3, she has the portal gun. Then the missions would have a co-op element where you could be Gordon or Alyx. Alyx would help get Gordon around to fight the bad guys, and the puzzle opportunity for a co-op of a portal gun wielding character and a fighting character is amazing.

Chell doesn't look anything like Alyx, though... although yeah, a co-op game with Gordon and Chell would be awesome! He'd need Chell to move quickly and through obstacles, but she'd need him to protect her, as she has no weapon.

But I don't think it'd work as single-player at all... an AI simply couldn't replicate the sort of teamwork you'd need.
