Left 4 Dead Minimum Requirements

Some people enjoy jazz, while others are crazy about zombie shooters. Well, I enjoy Duke Ellington and Miles Davis a lot, but I wouldn't play any zombie shooter, as long as it doesn't have a story as interesting as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and most such games don't. Anyway, Left 4 Dead may be more interesting than the average zombie shooter, since it's going to be focused on multiplayer co-operative gaming, and this alone is something new for this (rather narrow) genre...

Just look above - how could you love them?...NOT!!! I only enjoyed one or two zombie movies, and I usually avoid them, because they are extremely predictable, and I don't know if the same can be said about the Left 4 Dead minimum requirements, just made public. Fortunately, they don't look outrageous, but that remains to be seen...

My friends, the Left 4 Dead minimum requirements look like this:

Operating System: Windows Vista, XP or 2000
CPU: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 or AMD64X2 (or higher)
RAM: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Disc Drive: DVD-ROM Drive
Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
Video Card: Direct X 9 compatible (must be 256 MB or more with support for pixel shader 2.0)
Sound Card: Direct X9.0c compatible

I know this doesn't say much about the support offered for older video cards, for example the mid-range 7 series cards from nVidia, or the ATI 1xxx series or earlier ones with support for Shader 2.0, and I guess the more powerful your computer is, the better, as it seems to happen lately with most games.

So...what do you think? Scared of these Left 4 Dead minimum requirements? YOu shouldn't, but you'd surely have to prepare to get scared by the countless waves of zombies! Mua-ha-ha-ha...>:)

You are dumb.

You may be brilliant, but you should try harder to show it to the rest of us. Trying to offend people won't get you anywhere, believe me.

hey, can i play this with a 2.8 ghz pentium 4 processor, i know it says it requires 3.0 ghz, but can it play on 2.8ghz?

Posted by The Dude 12/08/2008 6:11 am

You are an idiot. Your command of basic writing skills is about as "narrow" as the zombie movies you so detest.

"...because they are extremely predictible [learn to spell, you dolt], and I don't know if the same can be said about the Left 4 Dead minimum requirements..."

Are you saying that you aren't sure whether or not the system requirements for a piece of software are predictable? That makes little to no sense whatsoever.

"I guess the more powerful your computer is, the better, as it seems to happen lately with most games."

Lately? Have you ever played a computer game before? This has been the case as long as there have been computer games as we know them.

Posted by Codrut Nistor 12/08/2008 10:06 am

Thank you very much for your appreciation; regarding the minimum requirements of the game, they should be predictable(thanks for noticing that mistake, I guess nobody's perfect), once you know what graphics engine is being used and see a bunch of movies.

Lol, yeah, I played a bunch of games, and some of them were properly optimized, but this is not happening these days too often, that's what I don't like. Talking about L4D, it should have even lower minimum requirements, if we check the things I mentioned above.

Posted by Des 02/26/2009 2:33 pm

lol my processor is 1.8 and i can play it

Posted by same 05/05/2009 9:08 pm

Yes, I think the minimum requirement is not always required as such. You can still paly the game if your computer does not qualify for the game, as is the case with Des.

hey ray, i had this problem on my old laptop it was the direct X version i used it sucked or something, so i think you should lower the one the game uses there is a way to do it i forgot but you need to go to launch options hope this helps :D

Posted by jasoncunanan@yahoo.com 07/08/2009 2:23 am

hi ray, try right clicking on the icon and click properties then set your compatibility - that might work.

Posted by man 07/17/2009 1:50 pm

ah! I tried those already, I think I'll just buy a graphics processor. Thanks to you all by the way.

Posted by Rye 08/30/2009 9:05 am

Storyline is just a piece of topping hardcore gamers could even care about. If storyline's the only thing we're after, then we might as well be contented in reading Frankenstein. Thing is, the level of difficulty of L4D plus the semi-real gaming experience (like the exploding bodies and such) makes it an eye-candy for hardcore gamers.

The only explanation why you find this genre narrow is because you're a novel boy. --,

Fwiw, welcome to competitive gaming.

Seems to me that you got a real problem here, the computer specifications you have here should run the program superb but with the "Black scree"? I think that's something weird. What operating system are you running anyway?

Try updating your video card's driver, if that doesn't work try uninstalling the game and reinstall it. Keep me posted.

try this:

navigate and search for the steam folder then look for steam apps and delete .cfg file, it should look like config.cfg. this stores the display settings. If other games based on source engine runs fine, then its likely some where setting in there making it go bad.

Try running your other applicationscs, crysis warhead, fallout 3 to see if same issues occur so you'll at least know if its application specific or with the system in general.

to update your driver, go to nvidia website and search the latest driver for your video card.

http://www.nvidia.com

it should give you the best updated driver for your hardware.

Now if you can possibly try using uniblue driver scanner, you should be able to update every drivers for each hardware on your pc - including your video card.

If all else fails - contact me - my yahoo id is

Goodluck!

Try updating your video card by going to NVIDIA's website:

www.nvidia.com

Look for your hardware's most recent driver, download it and install.

You can also use Driver Scanner. This software will update all your drivers including your video card's driver - It's a great software.

If all else fails, contact me at my yahoo messenger, my yahoo id is:

after remotely accessing Matley's computer, saw no problem, it's just that i can see the Game running, i can see visuals, but he can't, he can only see black. i suspected it was his old monitor which is 15" and has low refresh rate. What do you think about this case guys? do you think it's really the monitor? i suggested he try connecting his CPU to a different Monitor just to check.

Posted by Professor B 11/30/2009 7:39 pm

@ Jason

You cant connect a CPU to a monitor because CPU is the engine of the computer and is not responsible for video processing, in most cases. Thats the video cards job and in my opinion it isnt the monitor or the cpu or the video card. I mean the hardware seems fine, my guess is the power supply unit. If you constantly computer blacks out and restarts on load, load as in executing left 4 dead, then its probably the power supply unit, not able to produce enough power to power your video card and cpu. That is my theory so just switch his/her computer with a stronger and decent power supply and try it again. If that doesnt work my next guess is your cooling system. Maybe your cpu cooler doesnt run that well, however thats not usually the case because if your cpu is overheating you would see glitches on the video, have chopping graphics and then have a computer shutdown. Well thats my guess and goodluck!

Posted by Professor B 11/30/2009 7:43 pm

@ fobbsy

The commands are "alt tab" to switch windows, "ctrl alt delete" to view taskbar and "alt f4" to quit/exit the application.

Posted by Jason 12/01/2009 2:42 am

@ Professor B

I know you literally mean CPU or processor but I am not that stupid to ask him to connect his "PROCESSOR" or what is really called the "CPU" to be connected to another monitor- he'll be fucked up if he even tries to remove the "CPU" from the motherboard since he knew little about computers - the fact the it can't be connected to a monitor and you know that. I was talking to him and he knew that it was the whole Box he needs to carry and use with another monitor.

If you will look back at my recent post i asked him to update his video card driver - which is usually the work around - but people this guy can play CRYSIS with his machine - therefore there is no power supply issue here - I have "REMOTELY ACCESSED" his computer and saw the visuals of the left 4 dead game while it was starting so i knew it was working alright but the thing is he saw nothing on his end - which then I presume that the system was sending me information that the game was working fine but his monitor isn't showing exactly what it's supposed to be showing. this guy here is using a 15 inch monitor therefore has limited capability and can have issues running with the "BOX". This guy is on a low resolution output on his monitor (less than 1024 by 768)

cooling system as we know, if fails, will freeze the computer. It will not show glitches for it will froze first before it goes on with the glitches. it will not give the video card the chance to show glitches.

If there is a problem with the power supply - it will just shut him down if he tries to work on something like the game - but believe me it DOESN'T. so it's not the power supply.

I have remotely accessed this guy so basically i have an idea on what he has exactly on his computer but still i'm not sure about blaming the monitor but I have nothing else to blame - "I THINK/GUESS"

Hey guys, I have a quick question. I've been researching for the past few days on the system requirements for L4D because I'm having a terrible time finding a job. Moreover, I sold my PS3 over the summer to focus on the LSAT (Law School Admission Test), but I've had more than enough time to do that. Lol, finding a job these days is like winning the lotto!!!
Anyways, I have been researching on the min. requirement specs for this game and have come up with so many different perspectives.
As I read this thread, this guy Matley has almost the same system as I do.
The only difference is he probably has a PCI or PCI-E interface/bus slot; and he also has 2gb of RAM.
**However, I have an outdated AGP slot. And I have 1gb of RAM.
As I've researched I've noticed that the best AGP video card for my motherboard is the "HIS ATI Radeon HD 4670." And my motherboard can only take a max. of 2gb of RAM.

I'm wondering, do you believe that I should just simply change my entire system, or purchase another 1gb of RAM and the Radeon HD 4670? Would this be sufficient?
Currently I'm running a very old Nvidia FX 5200 (lol)...

Thanks

hi alex!

it is really hard to find a job nowadays specially over here in my country. Even College grads will get a hard time finding a good job over here and most of them end up in call centers - that is where good careers starts nowadays over here. Well I hope you find a good one though - and soon! hehehe...

I haven't heard of such Video Card with a name for AGP slots so i did a quick research and i was right that it was not for AGP. It was for PCI-Ex slots. based on my experience with the game - i have had a system that had on it a 256mb videocard which was then the best video Card for the agp slot, however, i was not able to play well with it the game even though i got a 1gb or ram. (sorry i forgot the name of the video card). there may be an issue with my processor since it was a single core - maybe it could've worked better if i had a dual core processor.

What i can i suggest is you go ahead change your whole system. I am running 4 computers - no video cards - all of them a sempron single cores but they run the game well except for little lags - I am using the motherboard's IGP which is 256mb - i am using an EMAXX motherboard - running on 1gb ddr2 ram. and i'm sure it will run better if i had dual core processors on them.

Better upgrade if you're a fan of the left 4 dead game cause Left 4 Dead 2 is coming up and it sure will need better GPU.

Good luck on your job hunting and I helped you out on your problem.

Posted by alex 12/03/2009 3:04 am

Hey Jason, yes, your information did help me. A few of my friends have been telling me to upgrade the motherboard and get a core 2 duo, also.

The video card I was talking about is called HIS ATI Radeon HD 4670, and it has 1gb of DDR3 memory, and it is AGP.

Here's the link:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5071689&CatId=318

So do you also recommend just getting a better motherboard and core 2 duo processor?

And thanks about the job endeavor. Where do you live?

Posted by Jason 12/22/2009 4:30 am

@Alex

Thanks for the link - i did not find this during my research what a shame LOL.

but anyways, this seems to be a powerful videocard, If you can get this one used with your system it should work perfectly fine with additional RAM just to make sure. But comparing it with PCI-Ex graphics card - they are much cheaper and more powerful. I am sure you can get a much powerful video card for the price of that one.

I am from Philippines...

Posted by Alfred 01/04/2010 6:38 am

guys if the game fails to run or crashes to desktop, do a check if you have all the .dlls working fine or update with latest patch

if l4d still fails to run try downgrading your graphics card driver, since it has been noticed that the latest drivers give compatability problems with l4d & l4d2

Hey, I want to know if I can run this on my computer. I have an E-machine.
I have a Intel Celeron Processor 420
2GB DDR2 Memory
160 GB Hard Drive
DVD+Rw Super Multi Format dual layer
Nvidia GeForce 7050 graphics
10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN
56k Modem

Please help me, I really want this game.

Posted by Jason 01/11/2010 4:00 am

Hi Kevin!

Looks like you are using a built in video card here.

Actually what you need to look at is your Video Card, your processor and your RAM. Your hard drive should also be able to contain the space it needs to install.

IN your case you are not using a "Separate" Video card" although you may purchase one so that you can get an enhanced visual experience with your gaming. I have a computer here which has built-in graphics processor like what you have but the difference is your IGP is more of a later version compared to mine.

Mine is running the left 4 dead game fine except you need to lower the graphics settings so as to avoid lags during game play.

In short, you can go get the game, install it on your pc and enjoy left 4 dead. But i would suggest you buy a Video card so that you can enjoy more hardcore games as well and also the later version of this game might interest you - Left 4 dead 2 - it's cool! but you'll need a video card to play it on your machine.

Hope this helps.

Jason

Hey thanks. What brand and size of video card should I get to play L4D2?

Posted by Jason 01/11/2010 4:21 am

you can check out the HD 4000 family of ATI - That's one of the best video cards you can get - that's middle class and expensive - but it all depends on the budget - just don't go lower than nvidia's geforce 7600 or ati's x1600

Lots of brand to choose from, you can always ask the store clerk to assist you with choosing the best for your need and budget.

Happy to have helped you with your query kevin.. God bless you and your loved ones!

Posted by Lithium 01/24/2010 5:40 pm

Hey guys! I have matley's solution, at least I think so. When the screen turns black, then that means that you haven't installed the necessarily Direct X, or you just installed your Video card in the wrong way. Also, it may be your monitor's problem. This happened to some users too.

Direct X: Install the latest version of Direct X that is compatible with your Video Card.

Video Card in the Wrong Way: Ask a professional to install it.

Monitor's compatibility problem: Go to Steam's folder, then search for config.cfg of L4D and change the resolution to your monitor's resolution.

Hope it helps!

Greetings

May I know the details about your graphics unit? is it a built in video or a video card you're using? maybe your video card can't run the game...

or you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the game...

good luck...

@ Jason

You cant connect a CPU to a monitor because CPU is the engine of the computer and is not responsible for video processing

one if the not the dumbest comments i have ever seen in my life...especially from someone named"Professor"

ALL Monitors are connected to the CPU(Central Processing Unit) otherwise how the hell do you think you get the picture, the CPU is NOT the engine of the computer it IS the computer(its like saying you can function without your brain)....go back to school before you post more ignorant garbage

Posted by alfred 02/07/2010 3:44 am

@Ace: your game crashes even before the main menu loads, do a regfix. or install the latest patch. i have personally solved this problem with my l4d2 this way and i suppose it would work for l4d as well.

Posted by Jason 02/07/2010 4:11 am

Ace,

Alfred is right, you need the right patch for your game. there are many patches out there but there's only one set of patch that worked for me. Let me know if you found it. I'll try to see if i can get you a link.

Good luck Ace..

Hello,
I'm kinda having the same problem as everyone else where my screen turns black as soon as I play. But when I raised the resolution of the game to the highest it worked for about 5 seconds then went black.
Heres my computer specs:
Operating System: Windows XP
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.93GHz
RAM: 512MB RAM
Disc Drive: Unknown
Hard Drive: Unsure but I know I have lots of space free
Video Card: DirectX 9.0c with ATI Radeon X300 SE 128MB
Sound Card: Direct X9.0c

Please Help!

Posted by arexniba 02/23/2010 8:16 am

I keep getting these notifications on my email and I'm getting so frustrated at how no one is paying attention to the minimum system requirements for this game!
To Adrian:
You need at least 2gb of RAM; your cpu processor should be over 3.0GHz for the Pentium 4; your vid card is out-dated.
As for your harddrive it doesn't really matter if your system itself is outdated.

To everyone else asking why their systems aren't working, please take time to look at l4d's website and click on "min. requirements."
