Running Crysis On High Settings Costs Too Much

Since the implementation of the "triple-SLI" system for Nvidia video-cards, a lot of PC-builder companies have come up with various computer configurations to meet the high requirements of the new games launched recently.

3-way-SLI

Crysis is "famous" for needing very huge system resources and heavy demands on the computing power. The PC Games Hardware company has come up with a system as in the image above that is capable to run Crysis at 37.9 frames per second on Very High settings with 1xAA/1xAF. The system was based on an Intel Quad Core system (Q6850 @ 3.00GHz) with 2GB of RAM, a triple SLI setup utilising 8800 Ultra's and a 1200W PSU. It never ceases to amuse me why these people, with lots of possibilities, limit themselves to only 2GB of RAM - it is such a proven fact that "the more - the better" - so why not 4 GB of the best DDR 2 memory available? And as if this wasn't enough - the price is also awkward - around $1800.

Because 4 gb requires XP x64.

Well really, to be running crysis at the highest, you'll need to be on vista. so XP x64 doesn't make a difference.

@ Thetinguy:

No, it's because they (system builders) still use XPSP2 32 bit or Vista 32bit (but even that limitation can be removed with the proper software tricks!)

Also, what's the point in using a 32bit operating system if the system can be made of parts that do not require or have already stable software drivers for the X64 version of both systems, XP and Vista. I'd refuse to think they're poor and can't afford a license for a 64bit version. So, I think, Vista x64 is the best way to go here.

The problem is that Vista only recognizes up to 3 GB of RAM, so even if you have the 4GB, it won't make a difference.

Read carefully above: Vista x64 does recognize and takes full advantage of 4GB of ram.

Actually the real reason for only using 2 gigs of ram is that a 32 bit system cannot handle more then 4 gigs. (i think the current max even with 64bit systems is 8 gigs but that i believe is a current hardware limitation) The 3 video cards take up the other 2 gigs of memory so anything above and beyond that would be unused (IE wasted) and if the ram on the motherboard was used before video memory then you would actually impede performance.

Yes, Greg, but I still stick to my reasoning - these people still use 32 bit systems - and therefore the limitation - my question was: are they really that poor that they can't afford to get a 64bit OS for that system? This is hilarious - if they really want to go for the top speed why not going for 4GB and Vista x64? Crysis has been created to work on the x64 platform too and in this case - the 4GB would do wonders for the loading times.

The lack of understanding on this topic astounds me........ All of you fail at life. Not one of you, all of you.

crysis cost so much to run well because it is meant to be future proofed, you can spend a lot now if you like but its really meant to be played at very high sometime in the future.

its good they are still doing stuff like this considering the way console ports seem to slow graphical advancement somewhat. aren't the ps3/360 still working with their old 7xxx series equivalents? (though obviously more efficient now)
